French president’s new centrist party is expected to take an overwhelming majority in parliament after the first found of elections held on Sunday.
According to official results released early on Monday, Emmanuel Macron’s En Marche and an ally party have a 32.32 percent win in the first round ahead of Les Republicans and its allies at 21.56 percent, while the far- right Front National at 13.2 percent, and the Socialist party of former president Francois Hollande, at 9.5 percent.
The elections were however marked by a record low voter turnout of just 49 percent.
“France is back,” declared French prime minister a Edouard Philippe, as the news came through.
Marcon needs a solid parliamentary majority if he is to put in place some of his proposed plans especially on labour laws.
Analysts say if his party goes to win a landslide victory in the final round on June 18, it will redraw the landscape of French politics.
